Can Defense Support Sanders' Campaign?

The issue last season was that CU’s defense couldn’t contain much of anything, ranking 130th (out of 133 FBS teams) in yards per game allowed (at 461.7), which scuttled whatever progress Sanders provided the Buffs’ offensively.

Now, with "Coach Prime" having another year to raid the transfer portal (with 247 Sports giving CU the sixth-ranked transfer class in the nation for 2024), it’s worth wondering whether the senior Sanders has enough in the tank to bring a second Heisman Trophy to Boulder in 2024.

If he does, Shedeur will join running back Rashaan Salaam as the only Buffs’ to win the coveted award, with Salaam doing so in 1994 after rushing for 2,055 yards and 24 touchdowns. That would be a win for a program that hasn’t won six games in a single season since going 10-4 in 2016.

Sanders In Solid Heisman Shape After Week 1

It was a bit of a hairy start to the 2024 college football season for Sanders and the Buffaloes on Thursday night, needing all 60 minutes to stave off an upset bid by FCS program North Dakota State in the team’s opener at Folsom Field.

In the end, Sanders’ 445-yard, four touchdown season debut was enough to propel the Buffs’ to a 31-26 win over the Bison, pumping new fuel into the Heisman Trophy hype machine that surrounds the 22-year-old senior quarterback.

Thursday’s outing was enough to prop up Sanders’ Heisman odds after the team’s Week 1 win, with the son of Deion having odds that range from +1800 on Caesars Sportsbook Colorado to +4500 on BetRivers.

Sanders Faces Stout Competition For Heisman

Right now, Sanders’ best Heisman odds are on Caesars Sportsbook Colorado, where he’s listed at +1800, ranking in a tie with Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II for 11th overall, while BetMGM and DraftKings Sportsbook (+2000 each), Bet365 (+2200), FanDuel Sportsbook (+2500) and ESPN BET (+3500) aren’t as high on his chances after Week 1.

BetRivers is the longest of longshots when it comes to the Sanders Heisman hype apparatus, at +4500, which makes sense given CU’s win total over/under of 5.5 on FanDuel Sportsbook Colorado entering the season.

For now, Sanders and the Buffs’ are tasked with putting it all together in consecutive non-conference road games against longtime foes, with a showdown in Lincoln against Matt Rhule’s Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sept. 7, followed by a Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado State in Fort Collins the following week, with the senior QB hoping to bolster his Heisman hopes with solid performances against CU’s longtime rivals.
