Few states in America have seen the type of population influx that Colorado has over the last few decades, with the U.S. Census Bureau reporting a 14.8% surge in the Centennial State’s populace between 2010 and 2020 alone.
That seismic increase in population has largely been centered along the Front Range from Colorado Springs north to the Wyoming border, resulting in traffic gridlock in major metropolitan areas, including the Springs and Denver.
Overall, a surprising city saw the largest increase in traffic congestion, with Weld County outpost Greeley reporting a 32% jump between 2022 and 2023, illustrating the type of influx that’s been seen across the board in Colorado of late.
According to data from the INRIX 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard, traffic in Colorado has only gotten worse over the past year. While other states had at least one city where the traffic congestion improved, Colorado’s major cities all reported increased congestion. BetColorado.com took a beat from Colorado sports betting to see which Colorado city had the worst increase in traffic congestion, according to this report.
Rank | City | % Increase In Traffic Congestion |
1 | Greeley | 32% |
2 | Colorado Springs | 18% |
T3 | Denver | 16% |
T3 | Boulder | 16% |
5 | Pueblo | 5% |
As stated above, Greeley was the ‘winner’ of Colorado’s gridlock award, with a 32% jump between 2022 and 2023, according to INRIX’s data, while Colorado Springs was the next closest, at 18%.
Throw in the state’s largest city and capital Denver and CU hotbed Boulder at No. 3, with both Front Range cities seeing a 16% increase in traffic gridlock during the two-year period in question and No. 5 Pueblo (+5%) and you have the full list of Colorado cities.
Still, none of the other hamlets could hold a candle to the meat packing capital of the world, with Greeley taking home the award (if you can call it that) of being Colorado’s biggest mover when it comes to traffic gridlock.
