It’s been eight years since the Denver Broncos last made it to the NFL playoffs, and Sean Payton has been tasked with snapping that skid this fall.
Payton assumes the coaching role in the Mile High City after a year-long sabbatical from coaching that followed the 59-year-old Californian’s 152-89 run with the New Orleans Saints between 2006 and 2021. In that timeframe, Payton and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees resurrected the Saints from NFL afterthought to Super Bowl champions — a task the former will look to do again in Colorado this season.
With kickoff — and peak Colorado sports betting season — just days away, BetColorado.com utilized data from Pro-Football-Reference.com to see which coaches get off to a hot start and have the best winning percentage in the month of September. Coaches must have at least three years as a head coach to qualify for this list.
NFL Coaches in September
The Broncos Super Bowl odds are +4000 and in the middle of the league to start the season.
Payton Has Struggled Out Of The Gate
Among the 20 qualifying NFL coaches, Payton ranks 12th in September winning percentage, at .540, going 27-23 during the opening month of the season with the Saints. Out of the seven NFL coaches with at least 20 wins in September, Payton ranked sixth in terms of winning percentage — just ahead of Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh (28-25-1, .528).
Denver’s season starts on Sept. 10 against Las Vegas at 11:25 a.m. local time. Colorado Sportsbooks list Denver as a four-point favorite with an over/under of 44 total points.
